A loss of heart / Robert McCrum. by
Material type: Text Text; Format: print ; Literary form: Fiction
Publication details: New York : Viking Press, 1982
Dissertation note: Depression is one of the most common psychological problems in modern society. It appears in chronic low-grade forms that can drain a personā€™s energy and in more acute forms that can be deeply disabling. Our materialist culture breeds depression by promoting distorted and unattainable goals for human life. And our commonly held psychological theories make it hard for people to make direct contact with depression as a living experience, by framing it as an objective ā€œmental disorderā€ to be quickly eliminated. The current treatments of choice ā€“ drugs, cognitive restructuring, or behavioral retraining ā€“ are primarily technical, and often keep depression at armā€™s length. However, in order to help people with depression, we must see how they create and maintain this state of mind in their moment-to-moment experience. This will help us understand depression not merely as an affliction, but as an opportunity to relate to oneā€™s life situation more honestly and directly.

The gang that couldn't shoot straight. by
Material type: Text Text; Format: print ; Literary form: Fiction
Publication details: New York, Viking Press [1969]
Dissertation note: It was a big bestseller when it was originally published in 1969. It became a major motion picture that provided Robert DeNiro with his first film role. Its title has entered into the language as a catch phrase. And it's terrific fun! The Gang That Couldn't Shoot Straight is the story of Papa Baccala, a Brooklyn Mafia boss, and Kid Sally Palumbo, a would-be capo who "couldn't run a gas station at a profit even if he stole the customers' cars". There's also Kid Sally's grandmother, who will go to extravagant lengths to see her boy make his mark. A love interest?
